Understanding the difference between routine, urgent and emergency care

Medicare Urgent Care Clinic

Medicare Urgent Care Clinic: When you need stitches, not surgery

Urgent care is when you need medical attention for an illness or injury that can be managed without a trip to the emergency department but cannot wait for a regular appointment with a GP.

These include treatments such as:

  • Minor burns
  • Respiratory illness
  • Minor eye and ear problems
  • Insect bites and rashes
  • Minor cuts
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Minor fractures, sprains, sports injuries and neck and back pain
  • Minor infections
  • Mild allergic reactions
Emergency care - dial 000

If you need emergency care, dial 000 or visit your emergency department

Emergency or life-threatening illnesses and injuries require immediate medical attention and management by an emergency department or hospital.

If you or a loved one has a life-threatening injury or illness, do not attend a Medicare UCC. Call triple zero (000) or go to your nearest emergency department.

Do not attend a Medicare UCC for:

  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Uncontrollable bleeding
  • Severe burns
  • Poisoning
  • Numbness or paralysis
  • Unconsciousness or unresponsiveness
  • Ongoing fever in infants
  • Seizures

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, call 000 or go straight to your nearest emergency department.

Visit your GP for general health care

If you need general health care or routine health, visit your GP

Your local GP should continue to be your first point of contact for non-emergency, routine, and preventative health care. Some GPs also offer same day appointments.

Care provided by your local GP includes:

  • Referrals for tests, scans or specialist care
  • Family planning advice
  • Mental health advice
  • Vaccinations and prescriptions
  • General screening and health checks
  • Diagnosis and treatment of diseases and illnesses

Medicare UCCs will not see people for things like chronic disease management or preventative health procedures such as cervical screening tests.

What is a Medicare Urgent Care Clinic?

Medicare Urgent Care Clinics (UCCs) are an Australian Government initiative designed to provide an alternative to the Emergency Department for patients with non-life-threatening conditions that require timely medical attention.

UCCs are staffed by experienced GPs and nurses who can assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of urgent but non-emergency conditions. All consultations are bulk billed through Medicare, meaning there are no out-of-pocket costs for eligible patients.

By providing a dedicated urgent care option, UCCs help reduce pressure on hospital Emergency Departments, ensuring that EDs can focus on life-threatening emergencies while patients with urgent needs receive prompt, high-quality care closer to home.

Bulk Billing Under Medicare

All medicare eligible consultations at our Urgent Care Clinic are fully bulk billed. This means the Australian Government covers the cost of your visit through Medicare, so there are no out-of-pocket expenses for you. Patients who are not eligible will be referred as appropriate.

What you need to bring:

  • Your Medicare card (or card number)
  • Photo identification (if available)
  • Any relevant medical history or medication lists

If you do not have a Medicare card, please contact our reception for information about costs and alternative options.
